Foundation first, and there is no way around it.
Connect the people, the equipment, the materials and the steps. Collect what happens, where it happens. Only then is there anything for a model to work on.
A model with no connected operation underneath it has nothing to work on. So the question worth asking a vendor is what data the model will have on its first day.
Three units: time, volume, complexity.
- Time. The same step, finished sooner, because the preparation is already done.
- Volume. More documents, more locations, more assets, without more people entering them.
- Complexity. Cases that used to need a specialist to untangle, handled as ordinary work.
The measure of that amplification is in what clients say, not in a feature list. At Kraftanlagen Romania, closing the stock went from two days to a few hours, and reports that used to take up to two weeks now come out of the system; every department works in the same process, in three countries. Quality control is sacred. Only a person can guarantee that what arrived at the plant or the warehouse is what they ordered.
The people first, the tool second.
The order of work puts the people first and the tool second. One short piece, filmed at the client, makes the same point from the other side.
We do not fully automate a flow.
A flow is split into steps instead, with a person between them. That is the same mechanism as the three steps above, said from the other end: the system prepares, the person confirms.
